Do you know what your Parish Council does for you?
All members of the Parish Council are volunteers and the Council is non-political. They volunteer because they are interested in contributing to their local community by improving the local area, providing facilities, encouraging community spirit, supporting local groups and village halls and by representing you at City Council, County Council and Central Government levels.
Your Precept pays for:
- An active, campaigning Parish Council, with Quality Status, that ensures local needs and concerns are addresses and made known to the relevant Government departments and agencies.
- Highly trained staff who are employed to monitor what is going on and to ensure that issues are considered and debated lawfully.
- The Parish Office one-stop information centre.
- Keeping you informed via the Parish Council quarterly magazine and website.
- Open Spaces including a woodland with SSSI status, play areas and play equipment, street furniture and a Cemetery.
- Support for local organisations.
- Maintenance of the Sturry Public toilets.
Sturry Parish Council has won several awards over the years. Here are the most recent:-
QUALITY COUNCIL STATUS. The Council was accredited by the National Association of Local Councils in September 2008. It was the first Council to be accredited under the new criteria and was commended for the submission, "Your submission really did tick all the boxes" was the comment from the Kent Association of Local Councils.
TREES FOR LIFE AWARD. The Parish Council applied for a Trees for Life Award from Taylors of Harrogate, the Yorkshire Tea people and won a bursary of £500 towards the purchase of trees in the Centenary Woodland and Park View Playing Field. The following is an extract from their letter:-
"We were really thrilled by the response and were inundated with applications. The standard was very high, it's a shame we had only 20 bursaries to present. After much thought and deliberation - over plenty of cups of Yorkshire tea - our judging panel managed to select the most deserving and appropriate projects and I'm pleased to tell you that Sturry Parish Council was selected as one of the winners".
KENT VILLAGE OF THE YEAR AWARD. Sturry Parish Council won FIRST PRIZE in the Kent Village of the Year Award - Youth Category section. The Council was given a framed certificate, a tree voucher and a plaque.
