Aire sur la lys Twinning Association
Do you enjoy visiting France and wish to know more about the French way of life? If so, why not join in the social and cultural activities provided by the Twinning Association. The main objective of the Association is to bring together the communities of Sturry, Fordwich and District, and that of Aire, a medieval town a short distance from Calais. The highlight each year is the exchange visit between families in Sturry, Fordwich and Aire which has led to longstanding friendships.
Our Annual Reunion was held on 8 May when we received 26 French friends. The day was filled with a very busy programme. Following lunch with local families, we visited Wildwood Wild Life Park. Our visit included a talk abour wild boar, given by a very enthusiastic and knowledgeable member of staff, and an opportunity to see these elusive animals close up. Everyone found this of particular interest as boar are found in the wild in both Kent and northern France. A minor disadvantage to our visit to the Park was the bleak and damp weather, a sharp contrast to the very sunny picture of Wildwood in May described by the staff when we booked the visit. Some of our French friends chose a spot of "retail therapy" in Canterbury as well as the tourist sights. In the evening we held a buffet supper & barn dance at Junior King's School. This was well attended by all our French visitors and their hosts, and other members of the local Association, and the food was as usual excellent. As a parting gift we presented our French friends wit a case of Chapel Down English wine.
Our next event will be a weekend visit by friends from Aire on 6/7 November, so that our friends can enjoy the experience of an English firework party. The Association's Annual General Meeting will take place on Friday 29 October 2010 at 7.30pm in Broad Oak VillageHall.
If you would like to know more about these events and the activities of the Association, please contact the Association's Secretary, Alan Holden, at twinning@sturry.org
